Welcome to the first edition of Clash of the Geekus, a weekly column in which 2 or more of our Editors sit down to discuss a hot topic of the week. Today we have Nahu and Velcor as our host editors. Enjoy!
This week we have seen a lot of talk about Pink. Reports of people preferring the pink DS Phat over the new & sleek DS lite boggle the mind. Later this same week we found out Nintendo is planning on releasing a pink DS lite. So it seems pink is quite an important color nowadays. The question for today is: Do you think a pink Wii should be available at launch?
Oh so pink!
Velcor:
Originality and customization are concepts that are being marketed to young people more than ever before; so a pink Wii, (among the other colored Wii’s) would support this individualistic tendency. I also think that the color pink should be included more often in hardware and peripherals, not only because it’s immediately linked to the female gamer, but to that whole non-gamer market that Nintendo is trying to reach with the Wii.
Nahu:
Hmm, you make a good couple of points, console customization has been with us gamers for quite a while now, from colored Gameboys and Xbox 360 faceplates to having a Swarovski encrusted Nintendo DS. The tendency is to give the customer what she/he wants. Nintendo has played it smart with its recent white hardware, taking a page from apple’s marketing book. White’s hot right now, but the female gamer really seems to not only prefer pink, but to fight for it. But is the current female console gamer going to prefer a pink Wii?
Velcor:
Hmm… I hardly think that a girl in her 20’s, a stereotypical hardcore girl gamer, that is planning on getting a Wii will even consider getting it in Pink. They’d likely go for black or red, because you know those colors are also IN right now.
Nahu:
Well lets not forget red isn’t even a confirmed color for the Nintendo Wii, and neither is pink. So if the hardcore female gamer isn’t likely to buy pink hardware, then who are all these people buying the pink DS? Is it the new gamers, or rather non-gamers, that Nintendo has been pursuing lately? These are your average females, from age 9 to 79 (if Nintendo is indeed serious in getting our grandmas to play). They will probably want a pink Wii, but another question comes up. Are they going to buy the Wii at launch?
Velcor:
You have a point there. I think the main market for pink Hardware will be non-gamers. Focusing on little girls’ yearning for all things pink, fashion conscious teens and grown-ups that just happen to like the color. Maybe because it matches with their living room’s walls. Perhaps they really like bubblegum and want to think of it while playing the Wii. When these people set their minds on something they get it without looking back.
Nahu:
And lets not forget pink is quite popular in gadgets these days, the Motorola Pink Razor is still a big seller and pink iPods are also a hot item. But the question remains, will they buy a Wii at launch? These people are hardly early adopters, they wait until they’ve tried the product or seen it on TV before a purchase. Are non-gamers going to be all hyped out about the Wii by launch?
Velcor:
Obviously not as much as the ones expecting it, by far. I agree they’ll wait for the news to report some things like “big sales” or “you should be getting one now”. And add to that a very low price compared to the other consoles. I think the boom will start approximately 3 weeks after launch.
Nahu :
Wow, 3 weeks, thats a short period of time. It would be quite an achievement if Nintendo’s marketing (A.K.A. Reggie) manages to hype the console not only as the must have item for children but the must have item for everyone that holiday season. If you are right and 3 weeks is all it takes for the mainstream to want a Wii then the pink Wii would have to be available at launch. So, final thoughts, do you think a pink Wii should be available at launch?
Velcor:
Definitely. I, for one, want one. Of course it doesn’t really matter if i get it on that color, but it would be a bonus for me.
Nahu:
Great, well I’ll have to disagree with you on this, I imagine it would take around 6 months before the mainstream really picks it up, or at least 6 months until a color change would make a sales difference. So, no, I think Nintendo should keep a pink Wii in mind but not for launch.

I think you should really make the pink wii , if it is launched please contact me on my email address and tell me how much it will cost.thanks so much for your help.It would only actualy make sense to make a wii in
pink because practically every other console is made in pink.Otherwise girls will have to use red which is nowhere nere as good as pink.

i luv pink! i have the razar, ipod, psp, ds lite in pink..i really dont like *video games* i just liek the color. i dont want to buy the wii only if its pink.. so plz give it some thought!

it looks so cool especially the way you play it. You actually run and swing the tennis racket! I cant wait to get it. I hope my mom and dad get it for me for Christmas! If I dont get that i slso want Nintendo DS. I want Mario Brother games and Zelda games!

There haven’t been any info about the release date of any other colored wii’s, but rest assured, when we know it, we’ll tell.

First of all, Velcor, you’re a dumbass! I’m 24 and FEMALE and I will wait for a Pink Wii if I have to. Furthermore, you’re a guy! What they he11 do you know about what colors are “in” right now? Why don’t you think before you type stuff down.

Now, allow me to be devil’s advocate here since I doubt Velcor will come and defend his words. I think what velcor ment was that a hardcore female gamer is less likely to buy into the mainstream perception of style and as such would probably rather get an edgy color like red or black.
I’ve found this to be true for almost all of the hardcore girl gamers I know, so I think its a valid point. But sure, go ahead, knock yourself out, get a pink wii! :)

I really… REALLY hope there’s going to be a pink wii. Honestly, I was perfectly content with my game boy color, one of the main reason I got a ds is because they have it in pink (and pokemon of course).

eh hannah montana posted on your site.. ; ] thats kinda funny. i think the same person posted 5 times.. i don’t think we need a pink wii. white is just as good, its not targeted at guys really because no one HATES white..usually. i think the wii is targeted at family’s b/c all the commericials are usually of families having a grand ol’ time waving a wii stick around. not a lot of families will buy a a red wii, they’d get a white one to satisfy everyone. and if u don’t like it you can always get a pink sharpie and go crazy.
