Sound test Saturday: Street Fighter III: 3rd strike - SpunkyThe fun to play and actually decent, despite not being misunderstood and not that loved Street Fighter III series got a lot of love from me. I own all 3 in the series on the ill fated, but still awesome Dreamcast. I’m easily swayed and was instantly drawn in by how Ryu’s clothes seem to move all over the place as he lobbed fireballs. But once I sat down with the game I fell for it and commended Capcom’s decision to just start afresh with a bevy of new faces, an all new piece of hardware on which to run the game and also a fresh sounding soundtrack.

The New generation and 2nd impact had cool soundtracks, but 3rd strike’s was kick ass. The little catchy jingles went out of the window in the place of full on dance, trance and drum ‘n bass fuelled compositions. The brilliant thing about 3rd strike’s soundtrack was that every stage had 3 versions of the same theme: 1 version for each progressive round, with the mix getting more and more intense.

Makoto’s theme stuck out for me instantly because it was cool, quirky and downright funky. You also don’t expect the track to progress and the beats to drop as they do as the rounds progress. “Spunky” is easily one of my fave tracks from the 3rd strike soundtrack. The whole of 3rd strike’s soundtrack was awesome because it was such a departure for Capcom and the composers didn’t care so much about trying to re-create classic themes. They just wanted to make good music that you could lob fireballs and combo suckers to.

The version of “Spunky” below is versions A, B and C all mixed together.

mortal-kombat-vs-dc-panel

Slightly late news from the front. Friday Acclaim held a Mortal Kombat vs DC Comics panel at San Diego Comic-Con 2008. Velcor and I were there covering the event, we were promised a giant poster in the press release. We were giddy as a couple of schoolgirls.

Highlights of the panel:

  • MK wanted to do a crossover with Tekken and Street Fighter.
  • This game is a reboot of the MK franchise, back to a clean slate.
  • Heavy focus on the story, you get to pick sides in character-specific chapters.
  • New gameplay mechanics: Free Fall Combat, Klose Fighting mode, clothes damage, improved scenario transitions.
  • Jax, Kitana, Green Lantern and The Joker announced into the rooster.
  • Heavy hinting at Aquaman being there.
  • Mortal Kombat compilation announced for release on September.
  • Comic will be released to tie-in with the game.
  • Might be released for the Wii.

Read on for our complete account of the event!

Sound test Saturday: Soul blade - The edge of soul

Sound test Saturdays - Soul blade When I first booted up Soul blade and saw the epic intro and heard the theme song, I was in complete awe. Even 12 years later, Soul blade still (in my opinion) ranks as being the ‘Soul’ game that delivered the best opening cinematic and theme song. What was not to love!? Seeing the Soul edge cast handle their business, Sophitia bathing as she cups her perfect breasts, Taki’s chronic jiggling (from the front and back), all backed by a kick ass song laced with orchestrated strings, killer drums, fierce guitars and a hot lead vocal. This is the shit hot anime and video game themes are made of! For me, it’ll never get old. Namco did not miss a beat when it came to creating a lasting first impression when it came Soul blade.

The version below is the full version which features on the official soundtrack and not the edited version which featured in the intro. Enjoy!

E3 Coverage: Capcom Resident Evil 5 Details

capcop-re5-e3-press-conference

Capcop has being quite vocal about Resident Evil 5 at this E3. Sadly, as vocal as they are they end up repeating the same stuff everywhere. This leaves us with but a few new details of RE5.

As far as the story goes, we know that its set 10 years after the destruction of Racoon City. With Chris Redfield working for the BSAA, a bio-terrorism fighting organization. He’s sent to Africa to investigate some sort of biological attack that has happened there. We also know that parallel to all of this, Chris has been tracking the original virus used by Umbrella . Coincidentally, both events lead him to the same town, Kijuju, how handy!

E3 Coverage: Nintendo Press Conference

nintendoconf-header

So, it’s almost that time again. Nintendo, oldest of the big 3, is going to take the stage soon and show us what it’s got for this year’s E3. But what exactly does the big N have in store for us? Some of the big rumors this year are:

  • An external hard drive attachment for the Wii
  • A new DS redesign, or the announcement of the possibility of such
  • Metroid Dread, the first new side-scrolling Metroid game since Fusion
  • A new Zelda game
  • Information on Animal Crossing Wii
  • More information on Pokémon Platinum, the upcoming continuation to Diamond and Pearl

Which of these are true, and which ones are just wishful thinking? Find out after the jump.

360conf-header

With news of a discontinued and suddenly cheaper console package, it’ll be interesting to see what else Microsoft has up its green sleeve to woo us in their press conference. Keep reading as we bring you live updates and commentary!

Here’s the wrap up. Check after the jump for the timeline commentary.

  • New Xbox Live Interface: Avatars, Mii-like things, to replace gamerpics.
  • More media providers joining the Xbox Live Marketplace: Universal, NBC, Netflix
  • Fallout 3, Fable 2, Gears of War 2, and Resident Evil 5 demos played, not announced for release on Xbox Live Marketplace
  • Guitar Hero: World Tour and Rock Band 2 bands announced, include Metallica and AC/DC.
  • Last Remnant trailer shown, still no gameplay
  • Final Fantasy XIII announced for Xbox 360

Microsoft looks like they’re getting ready to attack Nintendo’s death grip on the family gaming market. With new more accessible things like Avatars and a heavier focus on group gaming, the 360 seems poised to jump onto the people who are disenchanted with the Wii’s lack of HD or other media. There were no announcements about a motion controller yet aside from a Lips microphone, but E3 is far from over. Stay tuned for continuing coverage of the Big 3 press conferences!

The Almighty QQ: The Story Of The Worlds Most Powerful Virtual Economy

qq-coin2

If you thought we have it bad with  micro transactions, game cash shops and virtual economies in the western world you surely don’t know about the QQ coin. In China, a company called Tencent has a monopoly on virtual currencies, one so massive and shady that state regulators fear it may start to affect China’s own currency.

It all starts looking innocently enough. Tencent runs websites with all sorts of games where either subscriptions or items are bought with the QQ, Tencent’s virtual currency. Much like Second Life you can take your QQ and convert it back to cash, and this is where thing’s start getting shady.

Hype Report 1: Wherein I Compare Beef to Video Games

In this column I talk about the upcoming games covered in the industry press in the past week that I’m most and least excited about.

MINUS: Guitar Hero: On Tour

So far the hands-on reports of this game from various gaming news sources have been glowing, but I personally don’t buy it at all. The problem with rhythm games and American audiences is that we’ve been raised on mediocrity for some time now, so much so that the standards have been skewed. While the flank steaks of Guitar Hero and Rock Band might be tasty in their own right, they just can’t compare to the exquisite fillet mignon of titles like Drummania and IIDX. To carry this analogy further, Guitar Hero: World Tour looks to be the equivalent of a White Castle burger; it’s portable and flavorful, but cheap and short-lived (it would probably also be best enjoyed high).

Retro Video V2.0 - Wave Race: Blue Storm -

Hello again, dear DDN readers. Today I’ll show you one of my favorite racing games: the latest installment of the Wave Race franchise, Blue Storm.

I won’t lie, from the first time I picked up the N64 game from the nearest Toys’R'us I knew I’d love this game to no end, just like the F-zero series (on console, I didn’t like the GBA game). Excellent graphics, water physics, challenging AI, and the classic ride-the-dolphin trick: this racer gave us a lot without asking for anything in return. And that’s just the N64 version!

The Gamecube version included new stages, better soundtrack, more characters, character color and jet-ski handling customization, and an even more difficult AI. Needless to say, the upgrade from anonymous helmeted characters on the N64 to complete personalities and names on the GC title was an excellent feature, giving us greater quality in our Wave Race experience. I completely love how your guide changes depending on your racer. It makes it a more real experience, being in a tournament and all.

The 2 videos below are almost the same, but in the first one I fail miserably because of my lack of practice over these months. . . and the other is the third try. What a difference! Enjoy!

By the way, I’m playing on expert on Souther island on Sunny day.

Here’s the other one. Yay for me!

Liked it? I really had fun recording these! Wait for more some time later!

DDN At ACEN 2008 Cosplay Gallery

Come and see the best, most remarkable cosplayers who attended ACEN 2008! Finally after days of literary fighting to put this together it’s done: a gallery and slideshow of all of the awesome cosplayers our ACEN team got to meet. There is some great stuff in here: ingenious, comic, sexy and sometimes near naked cosplay for you to enjoy.

Also, catch a few shots of the crew in some of the less compromising positions I could find. Seriously, I had to remove about 20 images of empty alcohol bottles at the hotel room. You can watch the slideshow above and then head over to the full gallery after the jump.

PS: Bonus points if you can name every song in the slideshow!

Retro Video V2.0 - Capcom Vs. SNK 2 -

Hello again! Hope you didn’t miss me along with this section of DDN! I come with an upgraded version: This time I’m going to capture myself playing the games I like and I want you to know about. How’s that, huh?  I’m such a good fellah, I’m sure you’re gonna love it!

I’d like to start this new section with one of my favorite fighting games (and almost the only if not THE only 2d sprite fighting game for the Gamecube): Capcom Vs. SNK 2 EO. For the ones who don’t know about this one, this game features a clash from your favorite fighters from the SNK fighting games (mainly KOF but some others make it to the game) and the other half of the cast from CAPCOM games. A nice touch in this sequel is that you could select among 6 different “grooves” or styles of play (like Advanced or Extra in Kof ‘97 and ‘98 but more specified) so you can choose who you play with but how to do so.

In this quick match I set up I’m the 1P, using Haohmaru, Hibiki and Athena. Difficulty is level 8 and I’m playing a standard Arcade mode. Wait for the surprising finish!

Liked it? Thought so. Expect more of these Velcor-Video-Veracities sometime later! Peace!
