This just released new trailer for Street Fighter 4 is pretty amazing. Starting with an ode to the great 2D classics and then showing us some gameplay clips, it frankly makes me feel like searching for the nearest arcade in the middle of the night.

Also I simply love the song! Its so damn heroic, like out of a Rocky soundtrack. I must have it, anyone know the name?

gta-4-girl-6-fingers

Woah! Look what the Photoshop Disasters blog found out. That girl on the cover of GTA4, who also appeared on the cover of more than one prominent magazine seems to have more quirks than just her suggestive way of licking a lollypop. She has 6 fingers.

It’s interesting, but what is more interesting is that at this very moment, someone in some gaming forum is turning this into some kind of secret hint that’s part of a massive secret campaign by Rockstar, probably relating to GTA6.

As the trailer showed, breakable armour has been brought to the Soul arena! It’s nothing new, because many fighting fans (Sega ones in particular) will recall Fighting Vipers featuring breakable armour and that was released well over 10 years ago. Plus, characters could be placed at a defence disadvantage by being disarmed in Soul blade. But none the less it’s a cool new addition that will change the flow of fights greatly. The armour system works in the exact same way it did in Fighting vipers: with a character able to lose armour from their top, midriff or lower part of their body and their defence dropping as a result. I’m such a picky bastard that I hope the armour stays on the floor when it’s broken off. None of this disappearing into thin air bullshit. This game is rolling on PS3 and Xbox 360 - it better make use of that extra processing power.

As one of the earlier trailers showed, characters will have critical finishers. If a characters soul gauge gets depleted twice, then they’ll be open to get critical finished like a silly sucka. As if ring outs and after K.O grapples weren’t humiliating enough - you can add critical finishers to the list. I can’t wait to see them all. If Seigfried’s Ice slash, Ivy’s alchemist sword blade rape, Voldo’s sex rolly polly bomb and Kilik’s Phoenix smash (these are not official attack names) are anything to go by, you know they’re going to be over the top, razzle dazzle, pyrotechnic laden smackdowns.

I wasn’t really wowed by this game before, but it impresses me more with each new trailer that gets put out. If Namco really fine tune the characters and give the game some substantial game modes - this could be something special. The jury will be out until this game releases on whether this can better the original Soul Calibur on Dreamcast. Perhaps third time will be the charm…

hatsune-miku-pangya

You’ll remember earlier this month Pangya (Super Swing Golf) announced a tied event with Vocaloid’s Hatsune Miku. Back then we didn’t know what it was going to be, Miku as a playable character? As a caddy? As a skin? It was all in the air!

Well as it turns out the event ended up being a Miku outfit for Kooh plus a song called ‘A Shiny Day REMIX’ was set as the BGM for the West Wiz and Wiz Wiz courses. The song is the basic background music for those courses but with Miku singing along.

Sting has released a gameplay video of the fourth episode in their Dept. Heaven series for the Nintendo DS, Knights in the Nightmare. The game calls itself a “Turn-based RTS” which in itself seems contradictory. However, this trailer shows how that kind of mechanic is, indeed, possible.

The player controls the glowing white spirit with the stylus and commands units on the touchscreen. Enemies launch shoot-’em-up style attacks at the spirit, which you must dodge to avoid taking damage. It’s unknown how the non-spirit friendlies factor in in terms of HP, but they’re used to destroy any enemies you fight against.

Oh boy this went completely under my radar. Remember the Mario Theme Night at the Scrollbar, where they made a bunch of cocktails and shots based on the Mario universe? Well at the beginning of may they went back to work on their next game theme event, a Final Fantasy Night! They produced a total of 16 drinks, 5 shots and 11 cocktails. Names range from the Cactuar to the Summoner Yuna and even the Liberi Fatali.

But of all them my favorite has to be the Corrupted Live Stream, seen above. Its recipe? You pour a ‘One-Winged Angel’ shot into a ‘Live Stream’ cocktail, it looks awesome!

“When I’m sitting down to write a review I’m never setting out to think: ‘I am taking food off this guy’s table,’” muses Giant Bomb’s Jeff Gerstmann. Unfortunately, that can sometimes be the case in deals wherein the publisher arranges to pay royalties to the developer only if the game meets or exceeds a certain magic number on Metacritic (which varies from one deal to another).

MTV Multiplayer’s article on the subject says that the practice is not widespread, but fuels significant debate in the industry and can radically effect the future success of developers that enter into such deals. One um-named developer popped out a million-seller title but still didn’t receive royalties because the metacritic score was too low.

Yikes! Hopefully now that this is out in the open, these sorts of arrangements will become less popular. Giving a bonus based on a game’s score is one thing (as is the case in some deals), but totally lacking common sense and neglecting sales figure is another.

A new Resident Evil 5 trailer has just been released to the public from Captivate ‘08. The trailer features more gameplay than we’ve seen so far, lots of mob action with some really complex crowds. Its good to see the old chainsaw back although I’m not sure what to thing of the continuation of the action prompts. This seems like a much more complex game than what he had seen before.

We also finally discover who the mysterious female character from the latest screenshots was, apparently an African agent of some kind. It’s very clear in the trailer that Chris Redfield will be facing the same virus that appeared in Resident Evil 4. From a previous interview with Jun Takeuchi we now know that this game will focus on what has happened to Chris this last 10 years as well as the origin of this virus and its connection to what’s left of Umbrella, if anything.I think I’m officially hyped, are you hyped? I’m hyped!

DTM, makers of Vocaloid will be releasing a new version of its software that features the voice of J-Rock legend Gackt. This, supposedly, to finally bring a male voice to the vocaloid platform and to cash in on Gackt’s fame. This however is probably the first in a new trend of bringing famous voices to the Vocaloid platform. You can listen to a sample track of GACKPOID above.

If this goes well it’s easy to foresee periodic releases with the top voices of J-pop, J-rock and even voice actresses. Fanboys and fangirls would probably pay ridiculous prices for them and the Internet would in turn be filled with yet more Vocaloid videos. I think I’m much more scared than excited, what about you?

Every Monday I look at Nintendo’s Virtual Console releases. Sometimes I sigh in disappointment, sometimes I jump for joy, and other times I hadn’t even heard of the stuff they’re putting on there. Each time, though, I ask myself, “Why isn’t Super Mario RPG on this thing yet?” It looks like I won’t have to ask myself that anymore.

mariorpg

The classic SNES Squaresoft/Nintendo collaboration, Super Mario RPG: The Legend of the Seven Stars, is on its way to the Japanese virtual console in June. The game will cost 900 Wii Points as opposed to the typical 800 for SNES titles, but the extra 100 points is something I’d gladly shell out.

There’s little doubt of this coming to the US Virtual Console. Super Mario RPG was very well-received in its original release. The game has also been given an updated rating of E (for Everyone!) as of 2006 to replace the old Kids to Adults rating. All that’s left to do is wait.

We’ve already seen Darth Vader in action. Now we gets to see Yoda…

That’s my man right there. Darth Vader looked boring, Yoda looks fun. I could imagine him being a right bastard to fight against though. He’s so small that most attacks will probably go straight over his little green peanut head. It’s going to be interesting to see how throw and grapple animations look on Yoda. He’s of a completely different stature to the rest of the cast - so one does wonder.

If I had to choose between the PS3 and Xbox 360 version, I’d go for the 360. Yoda all the way!

Samus Aran, world-renowned smoking hot space badass and star of the Metroid games, was originally going to be a bonus character in Activision’s comic book crossover, Marvel: Ultimate Alliance. For whatever reason, it didn’t work out and she was removed (probably had something to do with the control demo being shown on the PS2 version). However, our buddies at GoNintendo tracked down some test footage of her in-game on YouTube. Watch it after the break.

luck-star-money

Kadokawa (of Keroro, Haruhi, Lucky Star fame among many others) has struck a deal with YouTube by which if it finds its content or derived content from its properties it will put up its own selection of ads on the video page and share the revenue with the poster. This deal, beyond covering its series being uploaded on their entirety is really looking to cash in on AMV’s (anime music videos), parodies, joke dubs among others. While its not as progressive as GONZO’s strategy of offering its content dubbed, online, for free at the same time as in Japan, it’s still a sign of an attitude change towards the internet and the western markets.

gundam-mural

This painting above, made by Japanese artist Hisashi Tenmyouya, sold for over $615,000.00 USD at a Christie’s art auction in Hong Kong. The artist describes the painting as such:

I produced this painting for the exhibition, “GUNDAM: Generating Futures,” which was held at the Suntory Museum from July 15 to August 31, 2005. The work was later exhibited at the Ueno Royal Museum and other venues. In Japan there are many “Gundam-Otaku’s,” and their adoration of Gundam is intense. Therefore, I did not want to change their image of Gundam. By changing Gundam’s “mobile suit” to tattoos, I altered his body, and made him even more customized. I emphasized the very concept of the “mobile suit,” and by setting Gundam against a background of gold leaf from traditional Japanese painting, I emphasized Gundam’s samurai origins.

Tenmyouya has actually created more works in this vein combining Japanese pop culture to traditional Japanese art, you can see more of his work on his personal website.

Now if only I could convince someone that my notebook sketches of Princess Zelda eating a triforce sandwich are worth a tenth of what this went for…
