Ok guys we’re going to try something different today. I watched Kite Liberator this afternoon and I just felt like it needed to be reviewed, so I created this one minute review of Kite Liberator. I’ve wanted to try out the whole one minute review concept for a while and so here it is. If you guys like it we might do more, so speak up!

P.S. One minute is more of a guideline than a rule, actual review is 1:18 plus intro and outro. Transcript after the break.

Packbot-wii

A couple of government engineers have rigged a military robot, the bomb diffusing kind, to work with a Wiimote. The pair of engineers developed the project while working at the Department of Energy, they say it will help make controlling the robots easier to control, freeing up the soldier’s attention to the sensitive data the robot sends. Important stuff, you know, like wether to cut off the green or red cable before everything goes boom. I sure hope its more responsive than a Warioware minigame!

They did this exact same thing before with an Xbox controller, it sure makes you wonder how these research labs operate. I’m betting it involves a lot of mountain dew and cheetos.

1up-cupcakes

Nachimir, an instructables user, made these awesome 1up cupcakes with green frosting and white chocolate. You can check out the easy instructions on how to make your own 1up cupcakes here. Be advised though that excessive consumption will probably lead to death by diabetes before immortality.

forth-on-the-atari

Maybe you were a bad enough dude to rescue the president, but are you man enough to program in FORTH? FORTH is a programing language from the 70’s and this is the cover of a book that teaches you how to use it to program on, you guessed it, the Atari.

More importantly, it teaches you how use FORTH to become a mini-hulk with a huge package and a killer moustache, ladies in vinyl underwear dig the moustache. I don’t think current consoles can do that!

ninja-train

People dressed as Ninjas get free train rides during Mie prefecture ’s Ninja festival. In the ancient days the Iga village (in the now Mie Prefecture) was one of the biggest centers in japan when it came to the practice of ninjutsu. So from April 1 to May 6 everyone in ninja garbs gets a free train ride courtesy of the city. Never mind that a true ninja wouldn’t  need to be given a free ride. He would ride free and you would never know it… if you’re lucky.

Last Saturday 15th of March Video Games Live gave its first performance in Mexico as well as its first performance with a student orchestra. Our very own Velcor being a music student fought for a spot on the show, read on to find out how it is to be on the inside of the beast as well as my account of the event as just another fan.

 VGL_high_res_logo_final.sized

Velcor’s Account:

It all started in Ensenada, Baja California, a small city 4 hours away from the city where the concert was to be held, and also the place most of the members from the orchestra and choir were from. It was about 3 weeks ago that I heard from one of my classmates that Video Games Live was recruiting members for the orchestra. Inquisitive as I am, I asked him if there was room for one more voice at the choir (I’ve been a bass voice on various performances before so I was confident I’d do a well job); Yes, he replied, so as soon as class ended, I dashed to talk to the school’s administration and asked them about being a part of the show.

After some mean stares and threats to their physical integrity sweet-talking they didn’t seem to have any objections (smart choice). And so I was in and on my way to being part of this video game music phenomenon.

In this Japanese TV ad you will see a woman getting nearly fondled by a mass of tentacles while she applies itch medicine to them. You wont find that so weird, proof of how jaded you have become by Japan. Worse even, you just might recognize this is as a reference to the earliest tentacle hentai in the world, a wood carving from 1820 called The Dream of the Fisherman’s Wife. I wish I could say the ad is the weirdest thing in here, but no, its the fact that its not weird at all anymore. You’re probably wishing there was a second part where they actually get down to business, aren’t you? What have we become?

saint-seiya-sagitarius-armor

Bandai is running a little expo on Akihabara celebrating the figurine world and inside the expo you’ll find this badass life-sized replica of Sagittarius’ Armor from Saint Seiya. Measuring around 1.80 meters high this sure beats the crap of all those cardboard cosplay armors you see at conventions, hell that thing actually looks lethal!

guitar-hero-ds-on-the-road

IGN today revealed exclusive information regarding the oh so rumored and discussed Guitar Hero game for the Nintendo DS. The game uses a peripheral called the Guitar Grip, which connects to the GBA port and has a strap for holding the DS with the palm of your hand like a book. The peripheral also comes with a nicely designed pick-shaped stylus to strum the guitar chords as your notes appear on screen.

This is as good as I can imagine a portable Guitar Hero being, the peripheral is actually portable, dispelling fears of a portable guitar. But on the downside you’ll look even more ridiculous than when you wail your little toy guitar around, lets just hope it delivers on the fun factor. The game comes out this summer loaded with 20 songs and enough in-game advertising to choke a cow.

acer-logo

It seems Acer never heard of the Phantom Console and its thinking of joining the console race. Acer’s senior vice president, James T. Wong, stated that Acer is considering entering the Vide Game market with what he called a console based on “open standards”. He further said:

“If you look at most of the other game machines that are out there right now — Nintendo’s, the Xbox — they are ‘closed’ and proprietary systems,”

Well that’s all good and fair Acer but we already have an “open” platform, its called the PC, you’ve been making those for years! And I somehow doubt a standard-spec PC is going to fly with the PC gaming crowd.

GDC_1979

Those old school games sure had weird premises, hadn’t you noticed? I mean, Pac-Man, its a game about popping pills and eating ghosts and fruit! What the fuck is up with that? Where did these people came up with such ridiculous plots? Well, lets remember this was back in the late 70’s and mental… enhancement was in vogue. The guys from Cracked and comedy troupe Those aren’t Muskets! teamed up to bring us a look at how these great classics may have been born. Comedy gold ensues. Click above to watch it!

Fabula nova crystallis: Final Fantasy XIII

Given that Square Enix recently vowed they’d be making an effort to release their games worldwide simultaneously, I think we should take a look at the games we hope we’ll be getting around the same time as Japan. Starting with Fabula nova crystallis.

real_super_mario

Ever wondered why Nintendo never goes for photorealism? Well the picture above might just be your answer. Pixeloo brings us this photorealistic rendition of our beloved Mario and its outright creepy! The gray stubble, the tired eyes, the sad look. This is one old, jaded plumber we’ve got here. I guess the burden of a loved one who’s always being kidnapped (and never giving Mario any) and his hardcore shroom addiction don’t do his health any good.

The common sight of Maids setting up in Akihabara’s streets to sing, do photo ops or any kind of performance is under attack. Japanese cops are going after the Maids in Akihabara, stating that their performances on the street lead to crowds and that leads to traffic obstruction, even though Akihabra is a well known pedestrian heaven. And as always, the subservient Japanese population bend over and take it straight from the police without any questioning.

“Akihabara is hallowed ground for anime, something that could well be one of Japan’s most important industries nowadays.” says Takuro Morinaga, economic analyst and Managing Director of the Nippon Maid Association. I shit you not, there’s a Nippon Maid Association.  Morinaga goes on to propose some sort of national maid registry, were registered maids would get permanent permission to perform in the streets without attracting the fuzz.

In the meantime the maids will continue to be harassed and censored in the streets of Akiba, free speech is now dead.
